All events have a catalyst. With that in mind, that doesn't mean we are meant to know them. The events of october 14th 1976 are filled with rumours and suspicions, many of which are based on unsubstantiated witnesses and seedy beliefs. Piecing together the witnesses testimony it was a balmy evening, fitting for the events that where destined to transpire. It was cloudy. The moon was shrouded though could be seen through the partially transparent clouds, which casted off enough light to reveal the bridge. It was a tall bridge that stood over a gorge, which had seen its fair share of blood stained rocks and cracked and broken bodies. It was well a known suicide spot, and was nicknamed Despair Bridge, though some have argued that the bridge has a more sinister truth.
On October 13th Jennifer Walken's was seen partying late at night with her girlfriends Amy Stratlin's and Tracy Fallon's. The three had been best friends since middle school and was, as her mother said, "Joined at the hip." When questioned on the events of the day of october 14th both May and Tracy expressed confusion. They both remember going home late at night with Jennifer, or Jenny as they called her, and waking the next morning without any knowledge of her whereabouts. They both swear that she came home with them, and that she had never left without saying anything on any occasion. All three are 25.
Around 6 in the morning the paperboy was running his route, when he supposedly saw Jennifer, who he said looks "really dirty and stuff" and that "she wasn't very good on her feet." Her disheveled appearance and poor motor skills was explainable by the reality that she was still probably intoxicated. From looking at the phone records, the Stratlin's home was phoned at 5:45, which was picked up and used for 3 minutes and 45 seconds. With a short conversation, it appears Jennifer left the home, possibly to meet with someone.
Jennifer has one ex-boyfriend who she had broken up with only months before, named jacob Bonds. Jacob was a smart kid, and visibly distraught by the death of his ex-girlfriend Jennifer, and understandably defensive on the implication that he had an involvement in the crime. Though suspected at first, Jacob's alibi stood strong. Looking at the family, Jennifer was raised by a predominately single mother, who though she had numerous boyfriends throughout Jennifer's childhood, was unable to settle down with any specific man. She was broken after the news that the body found among the rocks was her daughter.
Originally deemed a suicide, the autopsy found marks around Jennifer's wrists and skin under her fingernails. Everything else was either washed away or hidden by the trauma caused by the fall from the bridge which stood 400 feet above the gorge. Jennifer was a brunette with green eyes and a thin build, and was popular at school. She was a B student who had dreams of becoming a nurse. All in all a good kid. She was the one case that haunted me in my sleep. Who would kill someone like her? She was the perfect victim and the most tragic of deaths. In the night I look at the file, and see that young girl with infinite potential. She had a bright smile. A lovely complexion. Her hands where small. I often wonder what would life be if she hadn't been killed on october 14th, 22 years ago. She would be 38 today. A shame really. Still, all events have a catalyst.
